JPR is currently working with the City of Defiance to develop a Parks and Riverfront Master Plan. Located at the confluence of the Maumee and Auglaize Rivers, Defiance is home to 20 parks and three rivers, all of which are central to the master planning process. The goal of the project is to create a community-supported plan that can be implemented through capital projects and programmatic strategies.
A key focus of the Plan is enhancing connectivity between existing parks and downtown, while promoting accessible health and wellness opportunities across the City.
Community engagement has been at the heart of this initiative. To better understand public needs, the design team has attended community events, facilitated steering committee meetings, conducted stakeholder interviews, and hosted an interactive community workshop to gather feedback. Additionally, three online surveys have provided statistically valid insights, and a dedicated social media page has been used to share information and build support.
This outreach highlighted the importance of safe, intentional connectivity. Residents emphasized the need for family-friendly routes linking parks, downtown, and other key destinations. Riverfront trails and longer routes for exercise were particularly popular suggestions.
Guided by this feedback, the design team is developing concepts that feature a closed loop trail system connecting multiple destinations across the City. This system will also connect with the Buckeye Trail, which passes through Defiance. Incorporating safe street and railroad crossings is essential, along with ensuring accessibility and ease of access for all residents and visitors. Connectivity via the waterways is also an important aspect, and the inclusion of strategically located boat launches and kayak nodes is essential.
The Final Master Plan is anticipated to be completed in 2025. Once finalized, it will serve as a guiding framework for the City of Defiance, helping to create a connected and active community for its residents and visitors alike.
